AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAM

We know that recreation opportunities can be stressful for both families and children/youth with Autism because of the lack of supports and routine that individuals often require to feel safe and secure. Sometimes, individuals can also require practice to generalize the skills they are learning from school. For these reasons, we have started the After School program to ensure our participants can have the predictable routine they need as well as learn new skills while using the skills they have learned throughout the school year.

We are a dynamic team of Early Childhood Educators, ABA Therapists, Certified Recreation Therapists, and interested community partners. We have formed partnerships with Halifax Regional Municipality Recreation, Special Olympics, Dalhousie University and NSCC to offer recreation after school programs, as well as comprehensive programs during March Break and Summer.

Groups:

Participants are placed in groups while participating at the program. This helps keeps the number of participants small while doing activities and allows them to form bonds and friendships. There are currently 3 groups operating each site.

Groups are decided based on discussions between families, participants and staff. We consider age, abilities, special interests, goal priority and collaborative “best fit”.

Locations:

We are pleased to have a partnership with Halifax Regional Municipality Recreation Facilities and NSCC. We currently operate at:
